State Law Library celebrates West Virginia Day

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In celebration of West Virginia Day, the State Law Library will sponsor a brown bag lunch and lecture on "The Strange Career of the Thirty-Fifth Star: Abraham Lincoln and West Virginia Statehood." The featured speaker will be Dr. Stuart McGehee, West Virginia State University Professor of History.

The lecture will be held at noon, Thursday, June 18, in the House Government Organization Room, in the east wing of the Capitol Complex, Building 1, Room E-215.

The lecture will examine one of Lincoln’s most fascinating and controversial acts as our sixteenth president: signing the West Virginia Statehood Bill during the American Civil War. Dr. McGehee has spent years studying this complex event and has published his provocative interpretation, which links West Virginia’s economic development to the process of statehood.

Immediately following the lecture, tours of the State Law Library and sessions on basic legal research will be offered in Building 1, room E-404. All events are free and open to the public.

Metered parking is available on California Avenue, behind the Library Commission, or near the parking structure off the Greenbrier Street entrance to the complex.

The State Law Library is a part of the Administrative Office of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia.
