Supreme Court of Appeals To Hear Oral Arguments in
 Newly Restored Barbour County Courthouse

Philippi, W.Va. - The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia will hear oral arguments on October 7 at 10 a.m. in the newly restored Barbour County Courthouse in Philippi, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

"The Supreme Court has developed the recent tradition of hearing cases outside Charleston three times a year to give more people an opportunity to see West Virginia’s highest court in action. We look forward to hearing cases in the beautifully restored Barbour County Courthouse during its centennial year," Chief Justice Larry V. Starcher said.

The Barbour County Commission paid for the courthouse restoration with various grants and private donations. The restoration includes adding an elevator to meet requirements for public access under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

"The Supreme Court’s visit recognizes the importance of the work that’s been done to restore the Barbour County Courthouse. Our courthouses are symbols of our communities, and it is vital to improve them," Circuit Judge Alan Moats said. Judge Moats, who is the only circuit judge for Barbour and Taylor counties, serves on the West Virginia Courthouse Facilities Improvement Authority.

More information about the Supreme Court’s visit, including summaries of the cases the Court will hear, will be available in September.
