Supreme Court Announces Student Photo Contest Winners Charleston, W. Va. - The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia announces the winners of its second Law Day "Images of Freedom" photography competition. The competition was open to all West Virginia students from kindergarten through high school. "The justices had the fun job of judging the photos, and were impressed with the students’ creativity," Chief Justice Larry V. Starcher said. The Supreme Court will display the photographs during the month of May, beginning on Law Day on May 1, at the State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The photography exhibit will be in the East Wing of the main Capitol near the Supreme Court Administrative Office on the first floor. Along with the photo display, the Supreme Court will sponsor a variety of Law Day activities at the State Capitol courtyard on May 1. Festivities will include a Legal Information Fair from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with 35 state agencies, law enforcement, law firms and other legal organizations. The Court also will present the Liberty Bell Award to Gov. Bob Wise at 11:30 a.m. ABC sports analyst and West Virginia native Terry Bowden will speak immediately after the award presentation. High school students receiving honorable mention are: Monica Harvey, Brooke High School, Wellsburg; Courtney Weaver, Brooke High School, Wellsburg; Matthew Scarfo, Brooke High School, Wellsburg; and Adam Heflin, home school, Parkersburg. The winners from the middle school division are: John Brennskog, East Hardy Early Middle School, Baker (first place); Chrissy Wyrick, Spanishburg School, Spanishburg (second place); Derick Eudy, Spanishburg School, Spanishburg (third place). Middle school students receiving honorable mention are: Paul Ball, Tucker Valley Middle School, Parsons; Hope Heckler, Tucker Valley Middle School, Parsons; Emily Shaffer, Tucker Valley Middle School, Parsons; Chelsey Nester, West Preston Middle School, Masontown; Paige Lavender, East Bank Middle School, East Bank; and Steven Mitchell, Tucker Valley Middle School, Parsons. Tommy McQuain of Scared Heart Elementary School in Charleston is the first place winner in the grade school division.
