Print Resources

The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals Law Library contains one of the two largest collections of law books in the state.

Current West Virginia resources (W.Va. Code, W.Va. Reports, Southeastern Reporter, Michie's Jurisprudence, Va. & W.Va. Digest and the W.Va. Code of State Rules) are located in the Reading Room, as well as C.J.S., Am. Jur., Words & Phrases, the A.L.R. system, W.Va. Attorney General Opinions, Court of Claims, W.Va. Blue Book, W.Va. Law Review, general reference collection, newspapers, and form books.

Earlier Decennials and Federal and Regional Reporters are shelved on Level D, along with the archives of the W.Va. Supreme Court, Va. Reports, and Ohio Reports.  Assistance from the library staff is needed to access this particular floor.

A complete collection of both the Regional and Federal Reporter systems are located on Level C.  The accompanying Digest and Shepard's materials are shelved with corresponding sets.   The Decennial and General Digests, as well as the C.F.R. are also shelved on Level C.

The official Codes of the other 49 states and the District of Columbia are shelved on Level B.  In addition, the W.Va. Collection, old W.Va. and Va. Codes, pocket parts, Acts of the W.Va. Legislature, and W.Va. House and Senate Journals are also located on Level B. Treatises fill the rest of this floor.

Law reviews and periodicals are shelved on Level A.

Electronic Resources

The following CD-ROM products are available on library staff terminals. The staff may do brief searches of these products for the public if the corresponding printed material is missing from the shelves.

Microfiche Resources

There are two microfiche reader-printers in the Law Library. They are located on Level A at the bottom of the staircases.

Microfiche cabinets on Level A contain some legal periodicals and law reviews; Government Documents including the Code of Federal Regulations and the Federal Register; U.S. House and Senate documents; older U.S. Codes and Treaties; session laws from all U.S. states and territories; Abstracts on Crime and Juvenile Delinquency; Criminal Justice Abstracts, Council of State Governments, National Institute of Justice and National Center for State Courts documents; and some older official state court reports from other states.

Government Documents

The Supreme Court of Appeals Law Library is a selective depository for federal government documents. We select about eight percent of the total documents available in a variety of formats. Our Regional Depository is at the Wise Library at West Virginia University and the West Virginia Library Commission selects about 50 percent of the available documents. Many government databases are available on the Internet. Please see a staff member about searching these databases.
