Two Boone County magistrate clerks were recently named Hometown Heroes by the WSAZ television station for the work they did in raising money for a three-year-old boy who lost an eye to cancer.
Janet Dent and Georgann Cook organized a hot dog sale this spring for Brayden Mooney, the grandson of someone who works with them at the courthouse. The family's insurance company would not pay for a glass eye, which it said was cosmetic.
So Ms. Dent and Ms. Cook created flyers and distributed them to local businesses. Soon they received donations of supplies for the hot dog sale. They raised $1,300 from that. The remaining $2,700 needed for the glass eye they received in donations from businesses, churches, and individuals.
The women were nominated for the Hometown Hero recognition by Boone County Magistrate Charles Byrnside. The segment aired on WSAZ on August 7 and August 8 and the segment can be viewed on WSAZ's Web site at http://www.wsaz.com/hometownhero/headlines/52713942.html.
