Chief Justice Benjamin attends juvenile drug court opening

Chief Justice Brent D. Benjamin traveled to Princeton on December 10, 2009, for a ceremony to celebrate the opening of a juvenile drug court in Mercer County.

Drug courts are designed to offer community-based treatment programs to non-violent offenders who abuse or are addicted to substances.

The Mercer County juvenile drug court is the fourth juvenile drug court in the state, with the others serving youths in Logan, Wayne, and Cabell Counties.

Family Court Judge Mary Ellen Griffith will preside over the program.

The juvenile drug court is set up to serve twenty-five to thirty youths in the first year.

There are nine regional adult drug courts serving twenty-five counties.
