Access to Justice Commission meets; chooses chairman

The first organizational meeting of the Access to Justice Commission met Friday, October 30, 2009, in the Davis Gallery at the West Virginia University College of Law in Morgantown.

Chief Justice Brent D. Benjamin gave opening remarks to the commission members, who include Helen Campbell Altmeyer of Wheeling; Robert Baker of Beckley; WVU law professor Robert Bastress of Morgantown; Harry Deitzler of Charleston; Delegate Tiffany Lawrence, D-Jefferson; Reverend D. D. Meighen of Fairmont; Kevin J. Robinson of Beckley; and Reagan Whitmyer of Charleston.

Commission member Robert Baker was elected chairman at the meeting. He will serve a one year-term, with no term limits.

Chief Justice Benjamin signed a administrative order in January 2009 forming the Access to Justice Commission. The commission will seek to identify those areas of the West Virginia judicial system that can be improved for the benefit of our citizens and for members of the West Virginia State Bar.

The Commission will meet occasionally, with approved subcommittees meeting more often.

In addition to Chief Justice Benjamin, Court Administrative Director Steve Canterbury spoke. Agenda items included electing a chairman, drawing for terms of service, and a discussion of the commission's role.

The Commission met again December 9, 2009, in Charleston and discussed topics the group should focus on, including relevant subcommittees.
