Filing Deadline Extended Due to Flood

Charleston, W. Va. -- Governor Manchin today announced that West Virginia will allow an additional 48 hours in which to file Income Tax returns due to recent flooding in many West Virginia communities. This coincides with the extension granted by the Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers affected by the flooding will have until midnight April 19 to meet their tax filing obligations without incurring late filing and payment penalties.

Taxpayers filing returns under the extension should write “Flood Extension” on the top of the first page of the return so the Tax Department will not penalize the taxpayer for late filing or paying. Information regarding this extension may be obtained by contacting the Taxpayer Services Division at 1-800-982-8297.

Governor Manchin is continuing to work with the Office of Emergency Services to evaluate the flood damaged areas to determine what type of assistance is needed and available and with Tax Commissioner Virgil Helton to determine how to best provide tax relief for those who have been impacted by the recent storms.
