INCOME TAX FILING INFORMATION

Charleston, W. Va. -- This year April fifteenth will fall on Saturday giving Taxpayers an additional two days until April seventeenth to prepare and file their Income Tax returns. The Taxpayer Services Division of the State Tax Department will extend their hours until 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April seventeenth to answer questions and provide assistance with the filing of tax returns. This office is located at 1206 Quarrier Street and the telephone number is (304) 558-3333 or 1-800-982-8297.

Taxpayers who obtain an extension of time to file their federal income tax returns are automatically allowed the same extension of time to file their West Virginia income tax return. Those receiving Federal extensions electronically need only to indicate on the top of their West Virginia Return "Federal Extension Granted" and the IRS confirmation number. Individuals filing paper extension forms must attach the Federal Form 4868 to their return. Taxpayers who need an extension of time for West Virginia purposes but not for federal purposes, or those expecting to owe an additional tax due to West Virginia, must submit a completed Schedule L (Application for Extension of Time to File) and pay any tax expected to be due.

An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay any tax due. Any tax reasonably expected to be due must be paid with the application for extension. A late payment of tax will result in the assessment of interest and penalties on any amount not paid on or before April 17, 2006.

Forms, instructions, electronic services and refund inquiries may be obtained by visiting the Tax Department website http://www.state.wv.us/taxdiv or by calling the Interactive Voice Response system at (304) 344-2068 or toll-free 1-800-422-2075.
