John D. Perdue is the 24th Treasurer
of West Virginia, being first elected in 1996 and re-elected in 2000
and 2004. He is entering
his 34th year of public service. Mr. Perdue began
his public career with the Department of Agriculture and attained
the position of assistant commissioner. In 1989,
he was recruited to work on Governor Gaston Caperton’s staff,
where he was senior executive assistant for eight years.
He is a native of Boone County;
was educated in Boone County public
schools and holds a B.S. degree from West Virginia University.
He is chairman of the WVU College of Agriculture and Forestry
Visiting Committee; past president of the National Association
of State Treasurers in 2005; member of the board of the College Savings
Network for which he serves as liaison with NAST; member of West
Virginia Board of Trustees of the Leukemia Society of America and
is chairman of the board of the Board of Treasury Investments.
Treasurer Perdue has made education programs a high priority
for his office. He started the West Virginia Prepaid College Plan
and the SMART529 Colleges Savings Plan, he initiated the statewide
Bank At School program that is designed to help grade school youngsters
learn about money; and he started the Women and Money Conferences
for adults.
The Treasurer’s
Unclaimed Property Division has set numerous records for returning
more than millions of dollars in unclaimed funds to the rightful
owners in West Virginia.
E-Government and e-Pay systems developed by the Treasurers
Office has helped many state agencies better serve taxpayers by allowing
transactions by credit card and to interact with government over
the internet.
He and his wife, Robin, are the parents of two daughters.
