Nature of Work
Under administrative direction, performs professional work
at the advanced and/or administrative level providing geologic
services. Conducts complex or original research projects, or
coordinates several research teams or organizational units. May
involve the direct input of geological expertise into the
solution of engineering problems incurred in the location,
design, construction, and maintenance of highways. May require
travel and field work. Performs related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the advanced and/or administrative level of the
Geologist series. The assigned duties and responsibilities are
complex, difficult and varied. Work requires the development and
adoption of non-standard procedures and has more impact and
consequence of error than the full-performance level. Incumbent
possesses considerable latitude to accomplish tasks.
Examples of Work
Plans and evaluates the work of several organizational units
or sections.
Plans, organizes, and directs long-term research projects.
Supervises the work of subordinate professional and technical
personnel.
Conducts specialized research at the expert level.
Reviews the written reports of professional staff for
technical accuracy.
Makes expert geologic interpretation of data obtained from
field monitoring devices, laboratory tests, and surveys.
Develops design corrections and solutions of problems incurred
in the location, design, construction, and maintenance of
highways.
Prepares detailed technical reports.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the concepts and principles of geologic science
with expert knowledge in a given area.
Knowledge of federal and state geologic survey maps and
reports.
Ability to plan and evaluate the work of several units or
sections within the agency.
Ability to plan, organize, and direct long-term research
projects.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
Ability to conduct expert level research.
Ability to make expert geologic interpretation of data
obtained from field monitoring devices, laboratory tests,
and surveys.
Ability to develop design corrections and solutions of
problems incurred in the location, design, construction,
and maintenance of highways.
Ability to write detailed technical reports.
Minimum Training and Experience Requirements

Training:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or
university with a major in Geology.
Experience:
Four years of full-time or equivalent part-time
paid professional experience in geology, soil mechanics or
related field.
Substitution:
Successfully completed graduate study in
Geology from an accredited college or university may be
substituted on a year-for-year basis for the experience
requirement.
Select Certification-Areas of Assignment: Applicant must have
completed six (6) semester hours or have one (1) year of
professional geologic experience in the area of
specialization to be eligible.
Select certification may be requested in the following six (6)
areas of specialization: (1) Coal Geology; (2)
Environmental Geology; (3) Hydrology, Water Resources
Geology, Hydrogeology/Groundwater Geology; (4) Petroleum
Geology; (5) Land Reclamation and Soil Geology; (6)
Structural Geology.
