ARCHITECT

Nature of Work
Under general supervision, prepares and reviews technical plans and specifications for renovations/ additions of existing facilities and construction of new facilities; consults with designers, users, and others and provides technical assistance to ensure proposal's compliance with various regulations and standards; develops site evaluations and cost estimates; visits construction sites to inspect contractors' work in critical areas of construction and to confer on problems. May specialize in reviewing submitted documentation for compliance with state or federal licensure/certification standards and regulations for structures. Performs related work as required.

Examples of Work
Consults with architects, planners, administrators, etc., regarding interpretation and clarification of applicable codes.
Suggests designs to planners for renovation of existing facilities or construction of new facilities.
Reviews proposed construction sites prior to approval of projects.
Develops site evaluation, schematic drawings, and project costs.
Reviews construction plans, schematic drawings, and specifications during planning and construction stages for compliance with handicapped accessibility, fire safety codes, etc.
Reviews construction sites during construction to verify compliance with contract specifications.
Keeps plans for existing facilities current.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles and practices of architecture as applied to the construction and maintenance of facilities.
Knowledge of modern methods and techniques of building construction, materials, and equipment.
Knowledge of building laws, codes and ordinances.
Knowledge of general engineering principles, practices, and techniques.
Knowledge of various building systems in order to design and specify requirements for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, food facilities, or other systems.
Knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, and algebra.
Skill in drafting architectural schematics and drawings.
Skill in making technical computations.
Ability to direct the design and construction of structures used for medical, dental, or educational facilities, or other projects.
Ability to prepare and review plans, specs, and cost estimates for construction projects.
Ability to interpret criteria for special use structures, such as National Guard Bureau criteria for a command post or barracks, and prepare project documentation.
Ability to evaluate facility plans for compliance with specific needs criteria, and federal, state, and local codes and regulations; to detect and suggest corrective measures for structural defects and inadequate materials or workmanship.
Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications in planning, or reviewing and evaluating the planning of a public facility.
