Nature of
Work
Under general
supervision, performs professional work in archeology at the full-performance
level. Duties involve planning and conducting research and excavation activities
for prehistoric or early historic sites which are of special scientific
interest or are imminently threatened by destruction. Performs related
work as required.
Distinguishing
Characteristics
The Archeologist
1 is primarily distinguished from the Archeologist 2 by an absence of supervisory
authority over professional staff. The Archeologist 1 does not possess
an expert or advisor function as does the Archeologist 2.
Examples
of Work
Supervises
and conducts excavations at historic sites of major significance.
Studies, classifies,
and interprets artifacts recovered to determine age and cultural identify.
Establishes
chronological sequence of development of each culture from simpler to more
advanced levels.
Consults with
other professional persons engaged in historical archeology.
Writes progress
reports on the excavation and analysis; writes final archeological reports.
Presents lectures
relating to archeology.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilitiess
Knowledge of
the principles, practices and techniques of archeology.
Knowledge of
the techniques of archeological excavation and the processing and analysis
of historic artifacts.
Knowledge of
methods or archeological site restoration and historic building restoration.
Knowledge of
sources of historical research.
Knowledge of
methods of historical site research.
Ability to
plan and conduct archeological research projects.
Ability to
plan, conduct, and supervise archeological excavations.
Minimum
Qualifications

Training:
Master's Degree
from an accredited college or university in archeology or anthropology.
Substitution:
Experience
as described below may substitute for the required Master's Degree on a
year-for-year basis.
Experience:
One year of
experience in archeological research activities.
