GARMENT WORKER

Nature of Work
Under general supervision, performs work at the full-perfor mance level by sewing, mending, and altering fabric items for guests or residents of a state facility, or for use of or appear ance of the facility. Has considerable latitude to determine methods and procedures used to produce usable items. Completes appropriate paperwork. Performs related work as required.

Examples of Work
Cuts and sews, by hand or machine, articles of clothing to outfit facility residents or employees.
Mends, alters, or sews (new) linens, draperies, aprons, laundry bags, and other articles as needed; creates specialty items upon request.
Threads sewing machine; sets tension, uses attachments, and maintains machine.
Cleans work area regularly.
Marks items to prevent loss; stamps new linens.
Inventories supplies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of care, upkeep, and use of sewing machines.
Knowledge of a variety of fabrics, their properties and uses.
Knowledge of standard sewing procedures.
Skill in manipulating a hand-sewing needle and thread.
Ability to execute proper sewing procedure quickly and efficiently.
Ability to follow oral and written instruction.

Minimum Qualifications       [Top]
Experience:
Six months full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience sewing or mending fabric articles.
