PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATOR 1

Nature of Work
Under general supervision, performs professional work at the entry level planning, organizing, promoting, and implementing health education programs to instruct students, groups and the public in a range of health topics of public concern. May require travel. Performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the entry level in the series. Performs professional work learning to plan, organize, promote and implement public health education programs.

Examples of Work
Conducts surveys and studies for assessing the health education needs, opportunities and resources of the community.
Initiates activities to help communities recognize and solve public health problems using methods of community organization and other citizen involvement.
Works with professional and lay groups interested in public health programs to ensure the educational component is included in health projects.
Provides consultation to local health department personnel to recommend educational methods and to evaluate the effectiveness of educational efforts.
Prepares or procures and helps in the use of instructional aids and mass media communication.
Helps to design and implement health information programs and campaigns.
Conducts educational meetings for groups and organizations to communicate health care/prevention information and program awareness.
Researches health educational materials to remain familiar with promotional techniques and to review and purchase necessary materials to implement an education program.

Ability to present information and materials objectively.

Training:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a baccalaureate degree in community health education; public health education; health education; public health; health science; education with a major in health, physical or biological science; counseling; communication; education, criminal justice or related field.
