Nature of Work
Under general supervision, performs advanced
level protective services work in fire prevention, fire safety
inspection or arson/explosives investigation. The incumbent is
responsible for highly complex, more sensitive matters and serves
as an expert in an area(s) of specialty. Acts as lead worker and
trains lower level employees. Works within an assigned region of
the state. Required to work in potentially hazardous conditions
during arson/explosives investigations and fire safety inspections.
Travel is required. Performs related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Duties at the Assistant Fire
Marshal 3 level have immense legal impact and are more specialized.
Incumbents are considered as an expert and serve as lead workers
over other Assistant Fire Marshals.
Examples of Work
Serves as technical advisor in an area(s)of specialty.
Instructs, trains and advises lower level Assistant Fire
Marshals in fire prevention, fire safety inspection or
arson/explosives investigation and in the prescribed
methodology of the division.
Performs the most complex investigations of fires of suspicious
origin or those which involve loss of life. Searches fire
scene for physical evidence. Sketches and/or take photographs
at fire scenes. Employs electronic detectors to locate
physical evidence. Analyzes evidence. Interviews witnesses and
suspects to obtain corroborative evidence. Prepares detailed
investigative reports. Testifies in court as an expert
witness.
Conducts complex fire safety inspections of schools, public and
private health care facilities, correctional facilities;
businesses and occupancies for compliance with fire safety
codes. Inspections include visual examination and testing of
electrical systems, fire detection systems, sprinkler and fire
suppression systems. Determines adequacy of hallways,
stairways and doors to allow safe exit from the building.
Prepares written reports citing violations of code, nature of
violations and explaining actions to be taken to correct
violation; conducts follow-up inspections to determine if
corrective actions have been taken.
Cooperates with local, state and federal law enforcement
agencies in collecting evidence, canvassing witnesses, making
arrests and testifying in court.
Coordinates, organizes, and presents classes on public fire
safety education.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of state and federal laws on fire safety inspection
and/or arson/explosives investigation.
Knowledge of fire safety inspection and/or arson/explosives
procedures and techniques.
Ability to plan, assign, and coordinate the activities of other
Assistant Fire Marshals.
Ability to critically examine plans, drawings, and
specifications to determine compliance with fire codes.
Ability to conduct complex fire safety inspections and/or
arson/explosives investigations.
Ability to identify and preserve evidence collected at fire
scenes.
Ability to present ideas clearly, both orally and in writing.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with
property owners, public officials and fellow employees.
Ability to make presentations and instruct various age levels.
Minimum Qualifications

Training:
(1) An Associate Degree in fire science technology,
engineering technology, criminal justice or related field from
an accredited college or university and two years of full-time
or part-time equivalent paid or volunteer experience in law
enforcement, fire prevention, fire safety or building
inspection and two years of full-time paid experience as an
Assistant Fire Marshal 2.
OR
(2)A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or
university and four years of full-time or part-time equivalent
paid or volunteer experience in law enforcement, fire
prevention or fire safety and two years of full-time paid
experience as an Assistant Fire Marshal 2.
