GOLF COURSE TECHNICIAN

Nature of Work
Under general supervision, at the full-performance level, performs proper maintenance of soils and grasses that are used on golf courses. Assists supervisor in carrying out duties throughout the golf operations. May supervise other employees assisting with the golf course maintenance. Performs related work as required.

Examples of Work
Performs the maintenance and construction on the golf course to maintain the greens, tees, fairways and roads.
Maintains proper care and use of mowing and other equipment.
Participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, irrigation and drainage systems.
Seeds, fertilizes, sprays and aerates the golf course; tests soil conditions, applies herbicides and pesticides.
Prepares work reports, contract orders, requisitions, bids, orders for processing.
May supervise other employees assisting the golf course operation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the materials and tools used in such work, and of ordinary plan diseases and pest control.
Knowledge to recommend different grass seed and fertilizer for special golf turf.
Knowledge to operate different golf course equipment.
Knowledge of the watering and irrigation system, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.
Ability to control the chemical boundary located below the soil surface to prevent the germination of undesirable grasses.
Ability to mix and prescribe different chemicals for turf grass diseases.
Ability to identify the different turf grass diseases.

Minimum Qualifications       [Top]
Training:
Graduation from a two-year college or university with a degree in turf grass science or completed of 60 college hours including class work in soils and fertilizers, fundamental of turf grass science, pest control, irrigation and drainage, and landscape design.
Substitution:
Employment as a golf course technician or in a classification of comparable level may be substituted for the training on a year-for-year basis.
