Nature of Work
Under supervision of the GIS Manager, performs highly
responsible technical work in operating and coordinating remote
sensing hardware and software resources that affects the user
community. Work involves design, operation, and management of
remote sensing hardware and software resources with the context
of programs and policy directives. Work includes coordination of
remote sensing hardware and software activities; assistance in
managing remote sensing hardware, software, and service vendor
contracts; participation in planning and organizing remote
sensing development activities; and other remote sensing hardware
and software-related activities. Work is performed independently
within established policies, procedures, and guidelines and is
reviewed through reports, conferences, and Remote sensing project
performance. Performs related work as required.
Examples of Work
Coordinate remote sensing hardware and software resources;
confers and coordinates with GIS Manager, user
organizations, and GIS/remote sensing personnel to determine
user needs.
Assists in oversight all remote sensing hardware and software
operations; supervises remote sensing functions directly and
groups all activity associated with implementation,
operations, and enhancement of remote sensing hardware and
software.
Assists in coordinating contracts with remote sensing hardware,
software and related service vendors.
Performs installation, testing, and acceptance of remote sensing
hardware and software. Responsible for adherence to
applicable standards for remote sensing hardware and
software.
Helps coordinate maintenance and service contracts with remote
sensing hardware and software vendors.
Develops procedure for remote sensing applications and oversees
operations.
Monitors remote sensing application and operation performance.
Responds to user questions and resolves remote sensing
application and operation problems.
Evaluates requirements for remote sensing upgrades and
contributes to the selection and procurement of remote
sensing hardware, software, and related services.
Uses World Wide Web hardware and software to make remote sensing
data available to larger user community.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of remote sensing hardware and software components and
techniques.
Knowledge of automated mapping and spatial information processing
methods and techniques.
Knowledge of remote sensing (raster) database design and
structure.
Ability to coordinate with remote sensing staff and users on
remote sensing hardware and software needs and issues.
Ability to translate technical concepts and terminology in terms
understandable to management, department officials and users.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with
user departments, administrative officials, and employees.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications

Training:
Bachelor's degree, including six semester hours in
computer science or GIS from an accredited four-year
college or university. Preference may be given to those
with a major in geography, cartography, geology, forestry,
natural or earth sciences, environmental sciences,
engineering, engineering technology, mathematics, computer
sciences, planning or a related field.
Experience:
Four years of full-time or equivalent part-time
paid experience in geographic information system (GIS)
work.
Substitution:
Master's degree from an accredited college or
university in the above preferred fields may be substituted
for two years of the required experience. Doctorate degree
from an accredited college or university in the above
preferred fields may be substituted for three years of the
required experience.
