HISTOPATHOLOGY TECHNICIAN

Nature of Work
Under direct supervision of the pathologist, performs technical work at the full-performance level, assisting in the removal of tissue samples to be examined. Prepares tissue sample sections for examination. Stores or disposes of slides and/or gross tissue utilizing proper safety precautions. Maintains logs of every case. Maintains machines, work area and supplies. Per forms related work as required.

Examples of Work
Processes tissue samples, embeds samples in paraffin blocks, sections, mounts sections on slides, dries and stains slides and places slides in properly labeled container.
Sharpens blades for microtome, maintains frosting on boning plates, and cleans, oils and lubricates all machinery.
Changes or filters solutions at proper intervals, prepares special stains as requested; washes staining dishes and glassware and cleans work areas.
Inventories and orders laboratory supplies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of histologic techniques and practices.
Knowledge of basic inventory and record-keeping procedures.
Ability to organize and carry out assignments independently.

Minimum Qualifications       [Top]

Certified as a Histologic Technician by the National Society for Histology, Board of Registry, OR
Successful completion of a CAHEA (Committee on Allied Health, Education and Accreditation) accredited Histotechnology program, OR
Associate degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college or university including six semester hours (9 quarter hours) in chemistry and six semester hours ( 9 quarter hours) in biology, AND one year full-time acceptable experience in histopathology within the last ten years under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, or eligible), or an appropriately certified medical scientist, OR
High School graduation (or equivalent) AND two years full time acceptable experience in histopathology, within the last ten years, under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, or eligible), an appropriately certified medical scientist.
